m² to linear metres: divide the area by the board’s cover width plus the gap, in metres. 17.28 m² ÷ 0.145 m = 119.2 lm before waste. Buying whole boards with joints on joists takes 135.0 m (10.4% offcut waste), plus 5% spare.

Joist sizes and spans in the UK, Australia and New Zealand follow local standards and span tables (for example TRADA, AS 1684 and NZS 3604), not the US IRC. This tool doesn’t size joists. Check with your timber merchant or local building authority.

Linear metres are only half the answer

Merchants price decking per linear metre, so converting m² to lm is the usual first step. It isn’t the end: you can’t buy 69.3 metres of decking, you buy whole boards. Every joint has to land on a joist, and a 4.8 m deck with a small overhang won’t come out of a 4.8 m board. This calculator lays out each row and packs the pieces into the lengths you can buy, so you see the number of boards and the real waste.

Typical metric board sizes

  • UK softwood: commonly about 120 mm or 144 mm wide, 28–32 mm thick, in 2.4, 3.6 and 4.8 m lengths.
  • Australia and NZ hardwood: commonly 86–90 mm or 135–140 mm wide, often sold in random or set lengths.
  • Composite: usually about 135–150 mm wide in 3.6, 4.8 or 5.4 m lengths.

Always enter the actual cover width from your supplier’s sheet. Nominal sizes can be several millimetres off.

Structure is local

Joist sizing in the UK, Australia and New Zealand follows national standards and span tables (for example TRADA guidance, AS 1684 and NZS 3604), not the US International Residential Code. This metric tool counts joists at your chosen centres but doesn’t size them. Your timber merchant or local building authority can confirm sizes for your span.

Questions people ask

How do I convert m² to linear metres of decking?
Divide the area by the board’s cover width plus the gap, both in metres. For 140 mm boards with a 5 mm gap: 1 m² ÷ 0.145 m = 6.9 linear metres per square metre. Add waste for offcuts and joints. The calculator above shows the exact figure for whole boards.
How many decking boards do I need for 10 m²?
For 140 mm boards with 5 mm gaps you need about 69 linear metres before waste. In 3.6 m boards that is roughly 20 boards, but the real count depends on your deck’s shape, because each row must be made of whole boards and offcuts, with joints on joists.
What joist spacing should I use for decking?
In the UK and Australia, 400–450 mm centres are common for timber and composite boards, and 300 mm or less for diagonal layouts. The board manufacturer’s instructions are the deciding rule.
How many screws per square metre of decking?
Two screws per board at every joist. For 140 mm boards on 450 mm centres that is about 31 screws per m², and more at closer centres.
